Job Description Summary:

Responsible for the sale of new multi-line property/casualty insurance business via direct (inbound and/or outbound) telephone or internet contact with prospective customers. Must be able to knowledgably discuss insurance needs and product availability. Provides quotes, determines eligibility, and binds coverage after collecting all related underwriting data and information. Performs outbound calls and follow-up work as required to close the sale. Specializes in personal lines and/or commercial lines of business.




Core Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Handles incoming calls/emails from prospective customers for multiple lines of property/casualty business according to best practices.  Performs outbound calls to prospects originated by the applicant and performs follow-up work to close the sale.

  • Writes quality risk policies based on underwriting requirements set forth by the agency and our carrier/broker partners; makes decisions by interpreting and using appropriate classification systems, rating plans, tiers, and selection standards; utilizes training and sales techniques to close the sale.

  • Answers questions, provides explanations, and makes recommendations to applicants regarding appropriate coverage for auto and/or property policies, limits, deductibles; considers customer needs as well as company guidelines.  Determines and enters rating information into systems; provides quotation and binds coverage within prescribed limits.

  • Completes necessary applications and forms; issues conditional contact/binder within authority.  Follows up for necessary documents and payments in order to close the sale.

  • Assists and contributes to the team's current quotas/goals by meeting individual quotas/goals, as well as unit/team goals.

  • Maintains current understanding and proficiency in sales techniques and product offerings, keeps up to date with market conditions and competitors, and systems enhancements.  Cross-trains on other products and lines of business.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Typical Skills and Experiences: 


Education: High school diploma or equivalent; undergraduate studies preferred.  Continuing education as required by state(s).


License/Certification/Designation: State licensing as required for property/casualty products. Continuing education as required by state(s). Associates must obtain the required state licenses within the time period designated by the business unit. 


Experience: Typically, two years related work experience in sales and customer service. Some exceptions may apply. 

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:  Knowledge of sales techniques, property/casualty insurance products, insurance processing systems and procedures, best practices, state regulations and customer service practices. Possesses strong verbal and interpersonal skills to communicate technical insurance information to prospective customers and influence prospective customers to select Nationwide products.  Ability to operate personal computer hardware/software in a WINDOWS environment. Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.

Job Conditions: 

Working Conditions:  Requires the ability and availability to work in an office, independently at home or in the field. Position includes extended periods of sitting at a personal computer, use of a phone, some non-standard work hours and occasional travel.

Credit Check:  Due to the fiduciary accountabilities within this job, a valid credit check and/or background check will be required as part of the selection process.


Compensation: As a 1099 contractor, this is a mostly commission based position with earnings paid residually based on the premium volume of the book of business.  Initial salary considerations can be considered on an individual case by case basis. Most first year agents can expect to earn in the $70,000.00 to $80,000.00 range with high performers earning over six-figures.
